Although this may seem like a closed case to many, I find that many questions have been left unanswered, such as: who is responsible for the actual leak of classified information? Are we to believe that this compromise of national security was brainstormed and carried out by a lone gunman? In the end, Libby was convicted on obstruction of justice charges, but not for illegally disclosing classified information. Furthermore, Fitzgerald’s statement perplexes me greatly. What new information does Fitzgerald expect to receive? A grand jury has already heard testimonies from the Karl Rove, Ari Fleischer, and a slew of top officials. How is Fitzgerald going to extract new information from this administration? In the end, my hope is that the publicity this verdict generates will cause a public outcry for further investigation into the leak, although I’m not sure what’s left to investigate. My feeling is that all will be forgotten in two weeks time.
